I need help!! I don't get this!!?

I don't understand what the difference is between a bittorrent and a peer-to-peer file sharing programme. I just got Limewire and my major question is do I have to send what I downloaded back as well or what. I have no idea. Can someone tell me a generalisation of Limewire and & file sharing. Thanks
